A 25 year old man arrested by the Anambra State Police Command has allegedly confessed to being a member of a four man armed robbery and kidnapping syndicate operating around the Ifite Awka axis of the state.
The suspect, Emmanuel Chekwube Mark, was arrested by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, in the early hours of August 27, 2026, following intelligence on the activities of the gang. Police said three firearms, comprising two pump action guns and a locally fabricated pistol, were recovered from him.
During interrogation, Mark allegedly told investigators that the gang targeted unsuspecting victims using a tricycle to block their vehicles. According to the police, the suspects would then accuse their victims of scratching or damaging the tricycle, provoke an argument and allegedly overpower them at gunpoint before taking them to a hideout in Umoji, Ebenebe.
The suspect also allegedly confessed to participating in the abduction of a victim on July 22, 2026. He reportedly told investigators that the victim was dispossessed of valuables and later allegedly killed, with the remains abandoned in a bush.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has ordered a comprehensive investigation and directed operatives to intensify efforts to arrest the fleeing members of the syndicate. The Police Command said the operation remains part of its intelligence led efforts to dismantle kidnapping and armed robbery networks across Anambra.
