Nigeria, China Celebrate 55 Years Of Ties Through Food And Culture

Nigeria and China have marked 55 years of bilateral relations with a colourful food and cultural festival in Abuja, using cuisine, music and art to strengthen people to people ties between both countries.

The 2026 Nigeria China Food Festival, held at the China Cultural Centre, brought together guests to experience 12 Nigerian dishes representing the six geopolitical zones alongside 14 Chinese delicacies from different regions.

Speaking at the event, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy, Mr. Zhou Hongyou, said food offers a unique window into the history and culture of different peoples, noting that Nigeria and China share values of family, hospitality and community.

Beyond culture, the celebration also highlighted the growing economic relationship between both countries, with bilateral trade reportedly reaching 18 billion dollars in the first half of 2026, while Nigeria’s creative and tourism sectors were showcased as areas with significant growth potential.

Officials said the festival demonstrated how food and cultural exchange can deepen friendship and create economic opportunities, with NIHOTOUR Director General, Aare Abisoye Fagade, stressing Nigeria’s potential to become a major destination for global food tourism.
