Individual Waste Bins Could Cut Environmental Littering by 50% — Aguiyi

The Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, has challenged residents to take greater responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean, saying the simple habit of using individual waste bins could significantly reduce environmental littering across the state.
Aguiyi made the call while supervising the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Onitsha, where he observed residents cleaning their surroundings and participating in the exercise.
The Commissioner said environmental cleanliness should not be left entirely to government, stressing that proper waste management must begin from individual homes.
According to him, many residents who complain about indiscriminate dumping may not even have waste bins in their homes, a situation he said contributes to the growing problem of littering.
He therefore urged households to provide waste bins and make proper disposal a daily habit, noting that widespread compliance could reduce waste littered around communities by as much as 50 percent.
Aguiyi also called on corporate organisations, community groups and individuals to become more actively involved in environmental protection, stressing that a clean and healthy Anambra can only be achieved through collective responsibility.
He urged residents to see environmental sanitation as more than a monthly exercise, but as a daily responsibility that begins at home.
