Anambra Police Commissioner, Ama Urges Youths to Reject Thuggery, Embrace Sports, Responsible Behaviors 

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, Nnanna Oji Ama, has urged young people in the state to reject thuggery, violence, drug abuse and the misuse of social media, describing youths as critical partners in building a peaceful and secure society.

CP Ama made the call during activities marking the 2026 International Youth Day, including a walk against all forms of thuggery and digital thuggery in Anambra.

The Police Commissioner said the 2026 International Youth Day theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” highlights the shared aspirations of young people for dignity, opportunity, safety and a better future.

He emphasized the importance of sports as a tool for youth development and crime prevention, noting that organised sporting activities can promote discipline, teamwork, confidence and positive relationships while keeping young people away from criminal influences.

According to him, crime prevention is a collective responsibility, as factors such as negative peer influence, drug abuse, poverty, unemployment, intolerance and manipulation can expose young people to criminality.

He warned that the danger now extends to the digital space, where social media can be used to spread false information, incite violence and recruit youths into criminal activities.

The CP therefore urged young people not to allow themselves to be used as instruments of violence or digital thuggery, stressing that their future is more valuable than any temporary reward.

He called for stronger collaboration among the Police, youths, parents, schools, religious and traditional leaders, civil society organisations and communities in preventing crime and promoting peace.

CP Ama assured young people that the Police Command remains committed to creating an environment where they can live safely, pursue their dreams and achieve their aspirations through legitimate means.

He said, “Our young people are not the problem. You are an important part of the solution.”

The Commissioner called on Anambra youths to use the occasion of International Youth Day to renew their commitment to peace, responsible citizenship, responsible use of technology and the rejection of crime and violence.
