Solomon Buchi Criticises Tyla’s Planned Nigeria Concert, Urges Boycott

Nigerian writer and social commentator Solomon Buchi has criticised South African singer Tyla over her planned performance in Nigeria, urging Nigerians to boycott the concert.

Buchi argued that the Grammy winning artiste did not publicly speak out during previous xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other African immigrants in South Africa, yet is now set to perform before Nigerian audiences.

According to him, the planned concert presents an opportunity for Nigerians to take a stand against xenophobia rather than welcome the singer without raising concerns over the attacks.

“Tyla must not have that show,” Buchi said, adding that Nigerians should instead continue supporting local artistes.

He further suggested that fans who wish to watch Tyla perform could attend her concerts in South Africa, while encouraging anyone who attends the Nigerian show to stage peaceful protests against xenophobia.

Buchi maintained that his position was not directed at the singer personally but was intended to encourage collective action against xenophobic violence.

“It is not about Tyla. I have no beef with her, but it is about coming together as a people and saying, no, we have a voice and that voice matters,” he said.

Tyla has not publicly responded to Buchi’s comments.
