Police Arrest Osun Amotekun Operations Chief Over Alleged Possession of Police Uniform, Weapons

The Nigeria Police Force in Osun State has arrested the Director of Operations of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Joseph Olagunju, over alleged possession of police uniforms, axes, cutlasses, and other weapons.

The incident occurred near the Old Garage area of Osogbo, where members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) were protesting against their chairman, Nurudeen Alowonle, over alleged involvement in election related violence ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

According to reports, police operatives intercepted Olagunju while he was driving an unmarked grey Toyota Sienna conveying other Amotekun personnel. Although he identified himself, officers reportedly questioned why he was wearing trousers belonging to the Nigeria Police Force, a question he could not satisfactorily answer.

A search of the vehicle allegedly led to the recovery of axes, cutlasses, and other weapons. The other Amotekun personnel reportedly fled the scene, leaving Olagunju behind. He was subsequently disarmed, ordered to remove his ballistic vest, and taken into custody by the police.

Reacting to the development, the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, said he had yet to be fully briefed on the incident and would provide details later. Similarly, the Public Relations Officer of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Yusuf Idowu, said he would verify the incident before making any official statement.
