By Chibuzo Obidike

Spain have been crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 in a thrilling extra time final played on Sunday, July 19, at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, United States.

The victory earned La Roja their second FIFA World Cup title, ending a 16 year wait since they first lifted football’s most prestigious trophy in South Africa in 2010. It also brought to an end Argentina’s reign as world champions following their triumph at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The final lived up to expectations as two of the tournament’s best teams produced an intense tactical battle before a packed stadium and millions of television viewers across the globe. Both sides displayed remarkable discipline in defence and composure in midfield, making it difficult for either attack to create clear scoring opportunities during regulation time.

Spain dominated possession for long spells, patiently building attacks through their trademark passing style, while Argentina relied on quick transitions and the experience of captain Lionel Messi to threaten on the counter attack. However, both goalkeepers remained largely untroubled as the contest ended goalless after 90 minutes.

Argentina’s hopes suffered a major setback towards the end of regulation time when midfielder Enzo Fernández was shown a red card following a reckless challenge, forcing the South Americans to play the entirety of extra time with ten men.

Spain capitalised on their numerical advantage in the second half of extra time when substitute Ferran Torres emerged as the hero. The forward calmly finished in the 106th minute after a well worked attacking move to score what proved to be the decisive goal, sparking jubilant celebrations among Spanish players, coaching staff and supporters.

Despite being a man down, Argentina refused to surrender. Lionel Messi inspired several late attacking moves as the South Americans searched desperately for an equaliser, but Spain’s disciplined defence stood firm, frustrating every attempt until the final whistle.

The victory completed an outstanding campaign for Spain, who impressed throughout the tournament with a blend of youthful energy, tactical discipline and attacking quality. They overcame several strong opponents on their journey to the final before defeating the defending champions to reclaim football’s biggest prize.

For Argentina, the defeat marked the end of an impressive World Cup campaign. Although they fell short of retaining the title they won in Qatar four years ago, the team displayed resilience and determination throughout the competition and remained competitive until the final moments despite playing with ten men.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, will be remembered as the first edition of the tournament to feature 48 participating nations. The expanded format produced memorable matches, historic upsets and outstanding individual performances, culminating in a captivating final that crowned Spain as the new kings of world football.

Spain’s triumph not only secures their second World Cup title but also reaffirms their place among football’s elite nations, ushering in a new era of success for one of the sport’s most celebrated national teams.
