A Nigerian lawyer has accused some police officers operating along the Lagos airport route of allegedly extorting ₦3.1 million from his client, calling on the police authorities to investigate the incident.

In a video circulating online, the lawyer appealed to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police and the Inspector General of Police to investigate allegations that officers were targeting people travelling to and from the airport.

According to the lawyer, his client was stopped by the officers, who allegedly demanded to see his flight ticket before searching his phone.

He claimed the officers subsequently took his client to a police facility on Alhaji Aziz Street, Shogunle, Ikeja, where they allegedly threatened him, compelled him to make self incriminating statements and collected ₦3.1 million from him under duress.

The lawyer further alleged that the officers used point of sale (POS) agents and third party bank accounts to receive the money rather than their personal accounts.

He said a formal petition would be submitted to the relevant authorities and warned that POS agents allegedly involved in facilitating the payments could also face investigation.

The lawyer urged Nigerians travelling through airports to remain vigilant and seek legal assistance if they believe their rights have been violated during police encounters.

The allegations have not been independently verified, and the identities and responses of the officers involved were not provided in the account.
