Kebbi Government to Sponsor Mass Wedding for 300 Couples, Gives ₦250,000 Dowry to Each Groom

The Kebbi State Government has concluded plans to sponsor a mass wedding for 300 couples across the state as part of its social welfare initiative.

Speaking during a media briefing in Birnin Kebbi, Chairman of the Mass Wedding Committee, Alhaji Suleiman Muhammad Argungu, said the beneficiaries were selected from the state’s 21 local government areas and 225 wards after a screening exercise.

Argungu explained that the programme, organised in partnership with the NANAS Foundation, the pet project of the wife of Governor Nasir Idris, is open to all eligible indigenes irrespective of ethnic or religious background.

According to him, each groom will receive ₦250,000 as dowry in line with Islamic law, while all intending couples will undergo compulsory medical screening to determine their health status and compatibility. Local government committees have also been directed to verify that every groom has a reliable source of income to support his family.

The mass wedding will be held in Birnin Kebbi in the presence of Governor Nasir Idris, Islamic clerics and other dignitaries. The NANAS Foundation will also provide beds, mattresses, food items and other household essentials to help the newlyweds begin their marital journey, while a monitoring committee has been established to oversee their welfare after the ceremony.
