Two Die During World Cup Victory Celebrations in Mexico City

At least two people have died during massive celebrations in Mexico City following the country’s qualification for the next round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to the city’s health ministry, the victims, a 19 year old woman and a 44 year old man, died from asphyxiation as huge crowds gathered to celebrate Mexico’s victory. Authorities have not confirmed local media reports claiming that a third person also died during the celebrations.

The celebrations erupted after Mexico defeated Ecuador to secure their first FIFA World Cup knockout stage victory since 1986, advancing the co hosts to the Round of 16.

The Mexico City government estimated that more than one million fans flooded the streets, with the largest gathering taking place around the iconic Angel of Independence monument.

Authorities are yet to provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the fatalities as investigations continue.
