Umahi Commends Quick Intervention As Erosion Threatens Second Niger Bridge Corridor

The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, has commended the swift intervention by the contractor handling the Second Niger Bridge corridor after erosion washed away sections of the road embankment leading to the main bridge.

Umahi spoke during an inspection of the affected Obosi Bypass section, accompanied by officials of the Federal Ministry of Works, engineers and the Anambra and Delta State Works authorities. He attributed the damage to erosion linked to climate and heavy water flow, noting that about three sections of the road embankment had been affected.

The Minister praised the contractor for responding immediately without waiting for payment, describing the intervention as a demonstration of effective partnership between government and contractors. He said the Federal Government would process payment for the emergency works in line with due process.

Umahi directed engineers to construct additional drainage channels at the affected points, reinforce the washed out sections with stone pitching, mesh and concrete, and strengthen the base of the embankments to prevent further erosion. He also ordered officials to inspect other vulnerable locations, including the Ubunike axis, and address any emerging threats.

The Minister stressed that the priority was to restore and protect the road infrastructure while preventing a recurrence of the damage. He further directed the engineers to begin assessment and palliative work towards the restoration of the First Niger Bridge.
