Suspected Vandal Arrested While Allegedly Tampering With Benin–Onitsha 330kV Transmission Tower

By Staff Reporter

A suspected vandal has been arrested for allegedly attempting to vandalize a transmission tower along the Benin–Onitsha 330kV Transmission Line.

The suspect was apprehended by members of the Omelu Community Vigilante during a routine security patrol after he was reportedly found beneath one of the high voltage transmission towers allegedly tampering with its base bracing.

The vigilance of the community security outfit is believed to have prevented possible damage to the critical power infrastructure, which supplies electricity across parts of the country.

Following his arrest, the suspect was handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Authorities have reiterated the need for communities to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities around power installations and other critical national assets, warning that vandalism of public infrastructure remains a serious criminal offence.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
