A Nigerian woman has sparked debate on social media after accusing some doctors of recommending unnecessary medical tests that allegedly increase patients’ hospital bills.

In a video shared online, she recounted visiting a hospital over chest pain, where she was reportedly told she might have a heart condition and advised to undergo four costly medical tests.

According to her, she sought a second opinion from another consultant at the same hospital, who reviewed her symptoms and medical history and concluded that the tests were unnecessary. The consultant reportedly explained that the chest pain was more likely caused by muscle strain resulting from her active lifestyle.

The woman further alleged that the same doctor recommended the exact four tests to another patient on the same day.

She also claimed she had previously heard from a doctor that some hospitals encourage physicians to refer patients for laboratory investigations as a means of generating revenue.

However, she clarified that her criticism was not directed at doctors who request medically necessary tests to make accurate diagnoses, but at those who allegedly order investigations that may not be clinically justified.
