Police recover pistol, arrest two suspects during stop and search in Nnewi

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two men and recovered a six round English made pistol during a stop and search operation in Nnewi North Local Government Area.

The suspects, identified as 33 year old Chiemierie Joseph Ekwulugo and 29 year old Geoffrey Somtochukwu Enyiobi, were intercepted on the evening of September 26, 2026, while travelling on a Tiger 150 motorcycle without a registration number.

The operation was carried out by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Nnewi Sector, in collaboration with Police Mobile Force 54, during a visibility patrol within the Nnewi metropolis.

A search conducted on the two men led to the recovery of the firearm. They were subsequently taken into custody and are assisting the police with investigations.

The Command said investigators were working to establish how the suspects obtained the pistol, its intended use and whether they had any links to other criminal activities.

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, said the recovery underscored the importance of police visibility and coordinated stop and search operations in preventing the movement of illegal firearms.

He assured residents that the Command would sustain proactive patrols and intelligence led operations across the state to curb the circulation of dangerous weapons and prevent violent crimes.

The Commissioner also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report credible information about suspicious persons, movements or activities to the police.

The Command expressed appreciation for the cooperation of residents and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property across Anambra State.
