Police Inspector Killed at Imo Commissioner’s Residence, Service Rifle Stolen
A police inspector identified as Henry Effiong has been killed while on guard duty at the residence of the Imo State Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Chief Bar Rex Anunobi, in New Owerri.
The incident occurred on Monday, September 14, 2026, at the commissioner’s residence at No. 1 Sokom Villa, Area E, New Owerri.
According to a police situation report, the commissioner was alerted to the incident at about 8:00 a.m. after his housekeeper, Solomon Uzobu, discovered that the inspector had been killed.
Police officers from the New Owerri Police Division were deployed to the residence, where Effiong was found in his room with his legs tied and injuries believed to have been inflicted with a sharp object.
The police have raised suspicion over a security guard identified as Genesis, a native of Taraba State, who reportedly fled the residence after the incident, switched off his phone and left with his belongings.
The inspector’s service rifle and mobile phone were reportedly stolen, while an empty magazine and walkie talkie were recovered at the scene.
The remains of the deceased were evacuated to the Federal Teaching Hospital for preservation as police intensified efforts to arrest those responsible, locate the fleeing security guard and recover the stolen firearm.
