Police Arrest Nine Over Illegal Roadblocks, Highway Extortion
The Delta State Police Command has arrested nine suspects in a crackdown on illegal roadblocks and unauthorised revenue collection along major highways across the state.
The operation, which began on Friday, was carried out in compliance with the Federal Government’s directive to eliminate extortion and other criminal activities on Nigerian roads.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, saying the enforcement exercise targeted locations where illegal toll collection and roadblocks had disrupted the free movement of motorists and commuters.
According to the statement, the suspects were arrested at strategic locations, including the Head Bridge axis at the Delta Anambra boundary and the Benin Asaba Expressway near Agbor.
The police said the suspects remain in custody and will be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to restoring safety and order on highways across Delta State, warning that similar enforcement operations would be extended to other areas.
The police also urged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies during the ongoing operations, assuring motorists and commuters of efforts to ensure safer and harassment free movement across the state.
