Osun Governorship Poll: Adeleke Takes Early Lead Amid Vote Buying, Violence

Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party has taken an early lead in the Osun State governorship election as the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, continues the collation of results.

Official results announced by INEC in 17 Local Government Areas showed Adeleke ahead of APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, while ADC candidate Najeem Salaam trailed in third position.

Adeleke recorded strong performances in several local government areas, including Osogbo, Iwo, Ede South, Oriade and parts of Ife East.

The election, however, was marred by allegations of vote buying, BVAS malfunction, intimidation and violence in some areas.

Reports indicated that cash was allegedly distributed to voters in several polling units, while some observers also documented delays in the arrival of electoral officials and technical difficulties with BVAS.

There were also reports of gunshots, attacks on voters and journalists, and attempted ballot box snatching in parts of Osogbo, Ikirun, Ejigbo, Iree and other locations.

The APC, ADC and Accord parties traded accusations over the incidents, with each side alleging irregularities and misconduct by opponents.

Despite the controversies, collation of results continued across the state.

Adeleke’s lead remains provisional, with the final outcome to be determined by INEC after completion of the official collation.
