Marvel Announces ‘Black Panther III’, David Jonsson to Take Over Role as T’Challa’s Son

Marvel Studios has officially announced the third instalment of the blockbuster Black Panther franchise, with British actor David Jonsson set to lead the new chapter as the son of the late Chadwick Boseman’s iconic character, T’Challa.

The announcement was made during Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at the 2026 San Diego Comic Con, where Jonsson made a surprise appearance before thousands of excited fans.

Black Panther III is scheduled for worldwide theatrical release on December 15, 2028.

Jonsson, known for his roles in Industry and The Long Walk, will portray T’Challa’s son as the franchise moves into a new era following the death of Boseman in 2020.

The late actor, whose portrayal of the African superhero made him a global cultural icon, died at the age of 43 after a private battle with colon cancer.

Expressing his gratitude for joining the franchise, Jonsson told fans:

> “Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honour, the privilege and the blessing to join.”

Oscar winning filmmaker Ryan Coogler, who directed the first two Black Panther films, will return to direct the third instalment.

Coogler said the new film will focus on T’Challa’s son as he grows into the responsibility of carrying forward his father’s legacy as Wakanda’s protector.

The film is expected to explore themes of legacy, leadership and identity, while introducing a new generation of the Black Panther story.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige also joined Coogler and Jonsson on stage during the announcement, signalling the studio’s continued commitment to one of its most successful and culturally significant franchises.

Released in 2018, the original Black Panther grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide and became a landmark achievement for Marvel and global cinema.

The announcement of Black Panther III has already generated significant excitement among fans eager to see how Marvel will continue the story of Wakanda while honouring the legacy of Chadwick Boseman.
