Man Drowns After Alleged Cultists Chase Him Into Lagos River

A man identified as Opeyemi has drowned in a river in the Agility area of Mile 12, Lagos State, after he was allegedly chased and attacked by suspected cultists.

According to a police source cited by PUNCH, the incident occurred on Saturday, September 12, 2026, when Opeyemi was reportedly on his way to purchase an item before some persons allegedly began chasing him.

The source said the men eventually caught up with him and allegedly attacked him, prompting him to jump into the river in an attempt to escape. A resident also claimed that people who tried to rescue him were prevented from doing so by the alleged attackers.

However, anti cultism advocacy platform, Naija Confra, reported conflicting accounts from residents. While some claimed Opeyemi was under the influence of a substance and jumped into the river on his own, others who said they witnessed the incident alleged that he was chased and attacked before entering the river.

The circumstances surrounding the drowning remained unclear as the conflicting accounts had not been independently verified. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, was contacted for a reaction but had yet to respond as of the time of filing the report.
