Anambra State First Lady, Dr Nonye Soludo, has urged residents to take precautions against intensifying heat conditions, warning that babies, elderly people and those living with certain health conditions may face greater risks of heat related illnesses.
Soludo, founder of the non governmental organisation Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, also called on relevant agencies to pay special attention to vulnerable residents as concerns grow over the potential health effects of extreme temperatures.
According to a report by the Climate Impact Lab, Nigeria could record an additional 31,400 heat related deaths between September 2026 and February 2027 as an unusually strong El Niño weather pattern intensifies. The report, published on September 22, 2026, projected 451,000 additional heat related deaths globally between June 2026 and February 2027 compared with a normal year.
Speaking in a statement issued on Sunday, the First Lady advised residents to drink sufficient water, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, wear light clothing and keep their homes well ventilated.
She urged families to check on their loved ones, particularly elderly people and those who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat, and to seek immediate medical attention when signs of severe heat illness appear.
“Stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, wear light clothing, and keep your homes well ventilated,” she advised.
Soludo also reminded residents that Anambra’s emergency line remains 112, urging them to contact emergency responders when necessary.
She stressed that simple preventive measures and prompt action during heat related emergencies could help save lives.
