Two police officers have been killed and three other people injured after gunmen attacked the Uratta Police Station in Aba, Abia State, setting parts of the facility and vehicles ablaze.

The attack reportedly occurred at about 2 a.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2026, leaving parts of the police station building damaged.

The Abia State Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, confirmed the casualties, stating that the injured victims comprised two police officers and a civilian. They were taken to the Abia State University Teaching Hospital in Aba for treatment.

Governor Alex Otti later visited the scene of the attack and the injured victims at the hospital.

Reports indicated that the assailants used explosives during the assault, damaging part of the station building and a divisional patrol van. A source also alleged that the attackers attempted to access the police armoury but found it empty.

The police, however, clarified that no firearms or ammunition were taken away during the attack.

As of Saturday, no arrests had been made. Afolabi said security operations had been intensified to track down the attackers and bring those responsible to justice.

The police command urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could assist investigators in identifying and apprehending the perpetrators.
