EPL: Refereeing Body Admits Error Over Haaland Winner Against Man United
Premier League refereeing body, Pro Ref has admitted an “error of judgement” over Erling Haaland’s winning goal in Manchester City’s 1:0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Haaland scored in the 60th minute, converting Josko Gvardiol’s cross at the back post. The goal was initially ruled out for offside before VAR overturned the decision after determining that United defender, Patrick Dorgu had played Haaland onside.
However, questions remained over whether City’s Enzo Fernandez, who was in an offside position and attempted to reach the ball, had interfered with play.
Pro Ref said Fernandez did not make contact with the ball, making the offside decision subjective. The refereeing body, however, acknowledged that VAR should have recognised the possible impact of his position and recommended an on field review.
Pro Ref said it had contacted Manchester United to acknowledge what it considered an error of judgement and confirmed that the incident would be reviewed.
