Drama in Awka as police allegedly disrupt court judgment execution

By Chibuzo Obidike | IchieTimes

Tension reportedly erupted in Awka, Anambra State, on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, when police officers allegedly confronted court officials who were carrying out the execution of a court judgment.

The incident reportedly occurred during an enforcement exercise involving court bailiffs from the Chief Magistrate Court, Awka, who were said to be acting pursuant to a valid court warrant.

According to an account provided by persons involved in the exercise, a man who identified himself as the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, of B Division, Anambra State, approached the court officials and directed them to stop the execution and report to his office at the police station.

The court officials reportedly informed the officer that they were acting under a court order and would complete the execution before proceeding to the station.

The situation allegedly escalated when the police officer called for reinforcement.

According to the account, additional police officers arrived at the scene and allegedly confronted and harassed members of the court execution team.

The incident has now raised questions over the limits of police intervention in the execution of judicial orders and the relationship between law enforcement agencies and court officials carrying out their statutory duties.

The court officials are seeking attention to the incident, calling for the circumstances surrounding the confrontation to be properly investigated.

The key questions arising from the incident include whether the court officials were acting with a valid warrant, whether the police had legal grounds to halt the execution and whether proper procedures were followed by both sides during the confrontation.

As of the time of filing this report, the police authorities had not publicly responded to the allegations.

The incident also comes amid continuing public concerns about respect for the rule of law and the independence of judicial processes.

Where a court has issued an order and authorised its execution, any dispute over the validity, scope or enforcement of such an order ordinarily raises legal questions that may require proper judicial or administrative determination rather than confrontation at the point of execution.

IchieTimes understands that the video of the incident is currently circulating among members of the public, with calls for the authorities to establish exactly what transpired and whether any officer or court official acted outside the scope of the law.

The incident therefore places both the police and the judiciary under scrutiny, with the public awaiting an official account from the relevant authorities.
