A fatal shooting has triggered a wave of violence in Okpara Inland, Delta State, leaving community leaders’ residences damaged, a town hall vandalised and several vehicles burnt, as police launch an investigation into the death of a young man known as Don Cross.

The Delta State Police Command said Don Cross was shot on October 12 during an alleged drug raid conducted by persons attached to an unidentified security outfit. He later died while receiving treatment, prompting calls for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The situation reportedly escalated when individuals attacked the residence of the community’s President General, setting two of his vehicles ablaze and damaging his house. The Vice President General’s residence was also attacked and destroyed, while the community town hall was vandalised. Two additional vehicles, including a vigilante motorcycle, were also set on fire.

Commissioner of Police Samuel Erale visited the community on Wednesday and ordered a thorough investigation into both the shooting and the subsequent attacks. Police operatives from the Ughelli Area Command and Isiokolo Division, alongside military personnel, were deployed to restore order.

E rale condemned the violence and warned those responsible that they would be identified, arrested and prosecuted. “No grievance, however legitimate, justifies taking the law into one’s hands,” he said, urging anyone involved to submit themselves for investigation.

The police expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and appealed to residents to remain calm and reject reprisal attacks. The command said it would continue working with community leaders and other stakeholders to restore peace and protect lives and property.
