COOUTH Begins One Week Free Cancer Screening for Anambra Residents
The Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, COOUTH, Amaku, Awka, has commenced a one week free cancer screening exercise for residents of Anambra State.
The exercise, which began on Monday, will run until Friday, July 31, 2026, and covers screening for cervical cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer through PSA testing.
The initiative is part of activities marking the birthdays of Governor Chukwuma Soludo on July 28 and his wife, Dr Nonye Soludo, on July 31.
Speaking during the exercise, the Chief Medical Director of COOUTH, Dr Maureen Umeakuewulu, said the initiative was designed to promote early detection and save lives.
She urged residents to take cancer screening seriously, warning that late presentation, especially in advanced stages of breast cancer, can make treatment extremely difficult.
Dr Umeakuewulu said those who test negative would be advised on when to return for further screening, while those who test positive would receive the necessary medical attention and support.
