Awka South Mayor Vows to Keep Every Street and Drainage Clean

The Mayor of Awka South Local Government Area, Prince Chinedu Okafor, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining a clean, healthy and flood free environment, declaring that he will not relent until every street, gutter and drainage channel across the council area is cleared of refuse.

The Mayor made the declaration while leading local government officials and sanitation teams on an environmental sanitation exercise at the Ifite UNIZIK axis, where blocked drainage channels and accumulated refuse were cleared.

The exercise forms part of the implementation of the State of Emergency on Environment declared by Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo to tackle indiscriminate waste disposal and flooding across Anambra State.

Prince Okafor described the sanitation campaign as a continuous operation rather than a one time exercise, stressing that it is aimed at protecting lives, preventing floods and restoring environmental cleanliness in communities.

According to him, the local government will sustain aggressive enforcement of environmental sanitation laws to ensure full compliance by residents.

“Mr. Governor has declared war on dirt and flooding. As Mayor, I will not rest until every street, every gutter and every drainage in Awka South is clean. We are enforcing compliance without compromise, beginning with the Ifite UNIZIK area,” he said.

The Mayor also urged residents to stop dumping refuse into drainage channels and to cooperate with sanitation officials during monthly environmental sanitation exercises, noting that maintaining a clean environment is a collective responsibility.
