Anambra Orders Residents to Seek Approval Before Cutting Trees, Warns Violators of Sanctions
The Anambra State Government has directed residents to obtain approval from the Ministry of Environment before cutting down any tree, whether located within or outside their premises.
The Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, Esq., issued the directive during an ongoing radio programme on ABS 88.5 FM, Awka, where he reiterated the state government’s commitment to combating climate change and building a more environmentally sustainable Anambra.
Dr. Aguiyi expressed concern over the increasing rate of indiscriminate tree felling, describing the practice as a major contributor to climate change and environmental degradation.
He warned that anyone who cuts down trees without the required approval would face the full weight of the state’s environmental laws.
The Commissioner also urged residents to create and maintain more green areas in their homes and communities, while encouraging the construction of catchment pits to regulate stormwater runoff and reduce flooding during the rainy season.
According to him, tree planting and afforestation remain critical to conserving biodiversity, protecting forests and game reserves, and creating a healthier environment for present and future generations.
Dr. Aguiyi disclosed that the administration of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has planted more than two million trees since assuming office, describing the achievement as a major step towards restoring the state’s ecosystem.
He called on Ndi Anambra to take ownership of their environment by protecting existing trees, planting more trees and supporting government policies aimed at environmental conservation.
The Commissioner stressed that environmental protection is a collective responsibility and urged residents to work with the government to preserve nature and protect communities from the effects of climate change.
