Anambra Marks 2026 Olympic Day with Fitness Walk, Renews Commitment to Grassroots Sports Development

Anambra State joined millions of people across the world to celebrate the 2026 Olympic Day with a colourful fitness walk that brought together government officials, sports enthusiasts, football clubs, youth organisations, and fitness advocates in a show of unity and healthy living.
The commemorative walk, organised by the Anambra State Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, began at the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) Corporate Headquarters, Aroma, Awka, and moved through UNIZIK Junction and the Kwata Flyover before ending at the Awka City Stadium.

The event highlighted the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, respect, and the importance of regular physical activity while encouraging greater participation in sports across the state.
Speaking after the walk, the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Mr. Patrick Agha Mba, said Olympic Day is celebrated globally to encourage people of all ages to embrace healthy lifestyles through sports and exercise.

He commended the administration of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo for prioritising grassroots sports development through the construction of sporting facilities across the state, expressing confidence that even greater achievements lie ahead.
Representing the Chairman of Awka North Local Government Area, Mr. ThankGod Anagor, Mr. Augustine Onukwube described the event as a celebration of fitness, friendship, and togetherness.

He praised the wife of the Governor, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, and her non governmental organisation for consistently championing healthy living among Ndi Anambra, adding that Awka North is also strengthening grassroots sports development within the council area.
The owner of Alleluia Football Club, Mr. Elochukwu Nwosu, said his young players were excited to participate in the Olympic Day celebration, noting that the event provided an opportunity for athletes, coaches, and sports stakeholders to interact, build relationships, and inspire one another.

Also speaking, the owner of Game Changer Football Club, Mr. Chukwudi Obiemeka, described the event as a memorable experience and commended the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development alongside Mrs. Nonye Soludo for sustaining campaigns that encourage healthy lifestyles through sports.
Representing the National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, Anambra State Chapter, Mr. Kingsley Egwuchimobi applauded the state government’s commitment to youth empowerment and healthy living.

He stressed that sports remain one of the most effective ways of helping young people channel their energy positively while promoting discipline, teamwork, and personal development.
The celebration ended on an energetic note with aerobic exercise sessions, a healthy fruit breakfast, and an impressive taekwondo demonstration, reinforcing the message that regular physical activity is essential for healthier communities.
