ACTDA Seals Illegal Gas Plant, Demolishes Unsafe Structure in Enugwu Ukwu Enforcement Sweep

By Ichie Times

The Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) has sealed an illegal gas plant and demolished an unsafe structure built beneath high tension power lines during a major enforcement operation in Enugwu Ukwu, as part of ongoing efforts to promote orderly development and safeguard lives and property within the Awka Capital Territory.

The enforcement team, led by the Commander of Enforcement, Mr Jude Nworah, inspected residential and commercial areas to identify developments that contravene planning regulations and safety standards.

During the exercise, officers sealed an unauthorized gas plant that was established without the necessary approval from ACTDA.

Speaking during the operation, Mr Nworah said the agency’s investigation revealed that the gas plant failed to meet required safety standards and was located in a densely populated neighbourhood, thereby posing a serious danger to residents.

He stressed that illegal gas plants increase the risk of fire outbreaks, explosions and the destruction of lives and property, adding that the facility would remain sealed until all statutory requirements are met.

The team also demolished an illegal extension constructed directly beneath high tension electricity cables.

According to the commander, the structure violated the mandatory safety setback for power line corridors, exposing occupants and utility workers to significant danger while obstructing maintenance activities by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).

Mr Nworah reaffirmed ACTDA’s commitment to enforcing planning regulations across the capital territory, warning that similar illegal structures would continue to be removed.

He urged developers and business owners to obtain the appropriate approvals before commencing any construction or establishing commercial facilities, emphasizing that compliance with planning laws is essential for protecting lives, preserving public infrastructure and ensuring sustainable development in line with the Awka Capital Territory Master Plan.
