First Niger Bridge Closure: FRSC Deploys Personnel, Maps Alternative Routes

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Anambra State Sector Command, has deployed personnel to strategic locations across Onitsha and its environs ahead of the temporary closure of the First Niger Bridge from September 7 to 21, 2026.

The deployment is part of proactive measures to manage traffic, ensure smooth vehicular movement and protect road users during the two week closure period.

The Sector Commander, FRSC RS5.3 Anambra, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, disclosed this after a working visit and road audit on Saturday, September 5, to major routes connecting to the Second Niger Bridge, which will serve as a major alternative during the closure.

The exercise was carried out in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works, Anambra State Traffic Management Agency and relevant traffic officials from Anambra and Delta States.

The road audit focused on identifying routes that would carry increased traffic and areas requiring urgent intervention to minimise congestion and the risk of road crashes.

The FRSC identified the Nkpor, Old Road and Obosi route, Onitsha, Owerri Road from Upper Iweka, as well as Atani Road through Uga Junction to Harbour Industrial Layout as alternative routes for motorists.

Corps Commander Asekhauno assured road users that the FRSC, in collaboration with other traffic management agencies, is prepared to manage traffic and respond promptly to emergencies throughout the closure period.

She urged motorists to plan their journeys ahead, obey traffic rules and directives from traffic personnel, avoid unnecessary stopping or parking on the affected routes and refrain from dangerous driving.

The Sector Command also appealed to motorists and members of the public to cooperate with personnel deployed to strategic locations, stressing that compliance and patience would be crucial to achieving safe and seamless traffic movement during the First Niger Bridge closure.
