The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Anambra State Council, has commenced activities to mark its 35th anniversary, with journalists challenged to strengthen their commitment to truth, professionalism and service to society.

The anniversary, being celebrated as part of the 2026 NUJ Press Week, is themed “NUJ Anambra, 35 Years On: Reporting with Truth, Responsibility and Service.”

Speaking during the September Congress and press conference in Awka, the State Chairman of the Union, Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, urged members to take ownership of the celebration and work together to make the anniversary a worthy reflection of the growth and strength of journalism in Anambra

Odogwu said the 35th anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the journey of the Union, celebrate its achievements and showcase the unity of journalists in the state.

He also urged members to use their social media platforms to promote the activities and achievements of the Union, while encouraging journalists without conflicting assignments to participate fully in the Press Week programmes.

Chairman of the 2026 Press Week Planning Committee, Comrade Francis Ekpone, said the anniversary would also provide an opportunity to honour past leaders of the Union and renew its commitment to press freedom, professionalism and responsible journalism.

The programme features humanitarian visits to correctional centres, children’s homes and homes for the elderly and destitute, alongside competitions, indoor games and other activities designed to promote bonding among journalists.

Also speaking at the event, President General of the ASTUC Youth Wing, Ken Okoli, described the media as a powerful instrument for shaping society, educating citizens and promoting accountability.

Okoli urged journalists to use their platforms to promote positive values among young people, stressing that the media has a responsibility to encourage citizens to move beyond complaints and become active participants in the development of society.

The 2026 NUJ Press Week and 35th Anniversary celebrations will culminate in a grand finale on Thursday, September 10, 2026.
