Customs Seizes 112 Unsafe Tyres, 680 Cartons of Cosmetics on Eastern Waterways
The Nigeria Customs Service, Eastern Marine Command, has intercepted 112 pneumatic tyres and 680 cartons of cosmetics suspected to have been smuggled into Nigeria through the Oron/Ibaka–Cameroon waterways.
The seizure followed an intelligence led operation aimed at disrupting smuggling activities and preventing unsafe products from reaching Nigerian consumers.
The Acting Comptroller of the Command, DC Esien Etim Esiet, said the tyres were found to be unsafe, substandard and improperly stored, posing risks of tyre failure and road crashes.
He added that the cosmetics lacked proper documentation and required safety certification, with some suspected to contain banned or potentially toxic substances.
Esiet said the operation was also aimed at protecting legitimate businesses and local manufacturers from unfair competition created by smuggled goods.
“Whether it is substandard vehicle tyres that threaten lives on our highways or unverified cosmetic chemicals that endanger public health, we will continue to disrupt these illegal supply chains.”
The Customs chief commended officers for their vigilance and the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, for providing operational support to strengthen surveillance along the Eastern waterways.
