Ghana Police Foil Alleged Bank Robbery, Arrest Nigerian, Kill Two Suspects

Ghanaian police have foiled an alleged attempt by an armed gang to rob three banks in the Labone area of Accra, arresting a Nigerian national and killing two suspected robbers during a shootout.

The incident occurred on Thursday, August 13, 2026, after police received intelligence that the gang was planning to attack branches of GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank in the area.

Police operatives reportedly spotted the suspects in vehicles near the banks, leading to a chase after one of the vehicles attempted to escape. A Nigerian identified as Augustine Okechuku Maazi was arrested, while another occupant reportedly fled.

The occupants of a second vehicle allegedly opened fire on pursuing officers, leading to a gun battle in which two suspected robbers were fatally shot. Police recovered two vehicles allegedly used by the gang and a pistol.

Maazi remains in police custody and is assisting with investigations, while the bodies of the two deceased suspects have been deposited at a morgue. Police said efforts are ongoing to identify other members of the alleged gang and establish the full circumstances surrounding the planned robbery.
