NUJ ABS Awka Chapel, FIDA Anambra Plan Partnership to Defend Vulnerable Persons

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, ABS Awka Chapel, has expressed readiness to partner with the International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, Anambra State Chapter, to defend the rights of vulnerable and less privileged members of society.
The plan was disclosed when officials of the NUJ ABS Awka Chapel, led by its Chairman, Comrade Emmanuel Okonkwo, paid a courtesy visit to the Chairperson of FIDA Anambra State Chapter, Barrister Amara Mojeke, in her office in Awka.
Speaking during the visit, Comrade Okonkwo described journalists as the voice of the people, particularly the downtrodden, while FIDA remains a strong defender of the vulnerable.
He said a partnership between both organisations would help draw attention to cases of injustice and ensure that people without the resources or connections to seek justice are not abandoned.
Responding, Barrister Mojeke congratulated the new leadership of the NUJ ABS Awka Chapel and expressed FIDA’s readiness to collaborate with the journalists.
She highlighted some of the organisation’s interventions under her leadership, including securing justice for vulnerable persons, resolving family, inheritance and marital disputes, free medical outreaches, campaigns against child labour and human trafficking, grassroots legal rights awareness and charity outreaches.
Barrister Mojeke, who is also the Head of the Sexual, Gender and Inheritance Unit of the Anambra State Ministry of Justice, said FIDA has a team of lawyers who provide pro bono legal services to people who cannot afford legal representation.
She encouraged members of the public in need of legal assistance to visit the FIDA office around the Anambra State House of Assembly axis in Awka to access the services.
In a vote of thanks, the Treasurer of NUJ ABS Awka Chapel, Comrade Ijeoma Nwanya, commended FIDA for its selfless service to vulnerable people across the state.
She expressed optimism that the proposed partnership would help more victims of injustice access legal assistance and give greater visibility to issues affecting vulnerable persons in Anambra State.
