Otti Commissions 20 New Electric Buses, Expands Abia Green Shuttle Fleet

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has commissioned 20 new electric buses for the Abia Green Shuttle service, expanding the state’s clean and inclusive public transportation system.
The buses were formally commissioned on Friday at the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia, fulfilling the commitment made by the administration when the first batch of 20 electric buses was launched on December 23, 2025.
Speaking at the event, Governor Otti described transportation as a major driver of economic growth, noting that an efficient transport system would improve mobility, create opportunities and enhance the wellbeing of residents.
He said the adoption of electric buses would help reduce operational costs and emissions while advancing the administration’s vision of a modern, environmentally sustainable and inclusive Abia.
According to the Governor, the new buses come with expanded cargo capacity and accessibility features for persons with disabilities, ensuring greater comfort, dignity and access for all passengers.
Otti also announced stricter enforcement of traffic regulations across the state, declaring zero tolerance for reckless driving, beating traffic lights and overloading of vehicles.
He disclosed that the Abia State Road Traffic and Safety Management Agency (ARTSMA), in collaboration with the Harmonised Task Force, would extend its operations to 10pm daily, including weekends, as part of measures to improve road safety and protect lives and property.
The Governor commended the Interagency Transport Team, led by Mr Chinenye Mba Uzoukwu, for its commitment to the state’s transportation reforms, assuring that proper management of transport assets and staff welfare would remain priorities of the administration.
He warned against sabotage and vandalism of government transport assets, stressing that anyone found responsible would be investigated and prosecuted.
Otti also urged residents to fulfil their tax obligations, noting that increased revenue would enable the government to continue investing in infrastructure and public services.
He said the expansion of the Abia Green Shuttle fleet was another step towards closing the gap between the present condition of the state and the administration’s vision of a modern, efficient and people centred Abia.
