EFCC Reportedly Freezes Osun Government Account Days Before Governorship Election

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly placed one of the Osun State Government’s bank accounts on a “Post No Debit” restriction, just ten days before the state’s governorship election scheduled for August 15.

According to reports, the affected account, domiciled with First Bank, is used for the payment of workers’ salaries. The development reportedly came hours after Governor Ademola Adeleke alleged that the EFCC was planning to freeze the state’s accounts and those of top government officials.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the state government described the reported action as an attempt to disrupt government operations ahead of the election. Governor Adeleke argued that there was no legal basis for freezing the state’s accounts and maintained that the anti graft agency lacked the statutory powers to do so.

A government source was quoted as confirming that the account had been frozen, adding that the governor would address the media to brief the public on the situation.

As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not issued an official statement confirming or denying the reported account restriction.
