World Breastfeeding Week: Nonye Soludo Urges Mothers to Embrace Exclusive Breastfeedin
The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, has called on expectant and nursing mothers to embrace exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a child’s life, describing it as one of the most effective ways to ensure healthy growth and development.
In a message marking World Breastfeeding Week 2026, observed globally from August 1 to 7, Dr Soludo said breastfeeding provides babies with the essential nutrients they need, strengthens their immunity, and helps reduce childhood illnesses and mortality.
Speaking on this year’s theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,” she encouraged mothers to avoid giving babies water, herbal mixtures, or other foods during the first six months, in line with recommendations by health experts.
“Every child deserves the healthiest possible start in life, and one of the most powerful ways to achieve this is through quality breastfeeding,” she said, while commending mothers for their commitment to nurturing their children.
Dr Soludo, founder of the Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo initiative, reaffirmed the Anambra State Government’s commitment to promoting maternal and child health through sustained awareness campaigns, education, and support programmes.
She said the Healthy Living initiative would continue to empower mothers with the knowledge and confidence needed to practise exclusive breastfeeding, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive from birth.
World Breastfeeding Week is coordinated annually by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action in collaboration with the World Health Organization and UNICEF to promote breastfeeding as a vital foundation for child survival, nutrition, and sustainable development.
