COOUTH CMD Debunks Viral Claims of Poor Hospital Conditions
The Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku, Awka, Dr. Maureen Umeakuewulu, has dismissed allegations circulating on social media that the hospital is plagued by potholes, poor sanitation and substandard patient care.
Dr. Umeakuewulu made the clarification during an inspection tour of the hospital alongside the Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, and members of the media.
She explained that the inspection was organised to promote transparency and allow journalists to independently assess the condition of the hospital following a viral video making negative claims about the facility.
After touring the hospital from the entrance through key departments, including the emergency unit and patient wards, the Chief Medical Director said there were no potholes or unhygienic conditions as alleged in the viral video.
According to her, the hospital maintains a clean environment through regular sanitation exercises and vegetation control to enhance patient comfort and reduce mosquito breeding.
Dr. Umeakuewulu also highlighted reforms introduced under her administration, including the digitalisation of hospital records, the introduction of smart cards with barcode technology, provision of Wi-Fi services, renovation of hospital buildings and the implementation of an electronic revenue collection system to improve accountability.
She further disclosed that the Anambra State Government has approved medical equipment worth over ₦500 million to strengthen healthcare delivery, while accreditation processes for the hospital are ongoing.
The CMD commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his continued investment in the health sector, expressing confidence that the administration’s support will further position COOUTH as a centre of excellence in healthcare delivery.
