Police Uncover Fake Diplomatic Number Plate Syndicate in FCT

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has uncovered a criminal network involved in the production and use of fake diplomatic and official government number plates, while also recovering vandalised public infrastructure stolen across Abuja.

Speaking at a press briefing, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, said intelligence led operations led to the recovery of drainage covers, solar powered street lights, armoured electricity cables and internet communication cables stolen from various parts of the Federal Capital Territory.

Five suspects identified as Godwin Aja, Mustapha Nasiru, Ibrahim Garba, Abdulrasheed Sale and Dabarani Mujitafa were arrested in connection with the recovered items.

CP Sanusi described the vandalism of public infrastructure as economic sabotage, warning that the theft of drainage covers, street lights and power cables has contributed to road accidents, increased criminal activities in darkened areas and disruption of electricity supply.

The police also recovered more than 80 fake diplomatic and official government number plates allegedly used by criminals to evade security checks and gain unauthorized access to restricted locations.

According to the Commissioner, investigations revealed that some suspects paid between ₦500,000 and ₦1.7 million to obtain the fake number plates. He disclosed that while those found with the plates are in custody and will be charged to court, the manufacturers, believed to be operating outside the FCT, have been identified and are being tracked.

Sanusi urged residents to report vehicles displaying suspicious diplomatic or government registration plates, stressing that genuine diplomatic plates follow a recognized format.

He reaffirmed the FCT Police Command’s commitment to intelligence driven policing and called for continued public support in the fight against crime.
