18 Dead as Thousands Rush Into Spain’s Ceuta Enclave From Morocco

At least 18 migrants have died while attempting to cross from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, as thousands surged toward the border in one of the largest migration waves in recent years.

According to local authorities, most of the victims drowned while trying to swim across the border, while others died in a stampede near the Tarajal beach border fence.

Spanish officials said thousands of migrants, mainly Moroccans, attempted to enter Ceuta by both land and sea. The exact number of those who made it into the territory has not been confirmed.

In response, the Spanish government has deployed military personnel to support the Civil Guard in maintaining security. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is expected to visit Ceuta alongside Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska.

The reason behind the sudden mass movement remains unclear. Ceuta, a Spanish territory on the North African coast, has long been a major entry point for migrants seeking to reach Europe.
