Flood Relief at Last: Soludo Begins Desilting of Sakamori Gutter in Okpoko

After years of battling devastating floods, residents of Okpoko in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State have received a major boost as the Anambra State Government commenced the long-awaited desilting of the Sakamori Gutter, a critical drainage channel expected to bring lasting relief to the flood-prone community.
The intervention, approved by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, is part of the state government’s ongoing commitment to addressing environmental challenges, improving public health and protecting lives and property across Anambra.
Work officially commenced on July 27 as ALITHO Construction Company, the first contractor mobilised for the project, moved to the Obodoukwu Road axis of Okpoko to begin the desilting exercise. Three additional contractors are expected to join the operation to ensure the project is completed within schedule.
Speaking at the project site, the Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area, Hon. Kenneth Akwuobi, described the exercise as a landmark intervention that would finally address one of the community’s most persistent environmental challenges. He expressed appreciation to Governor Soludo for listening to the cries of residents and approving the project, describing the governor as a leader committed to practical solutions that directly improve the lives of the people.
Hon. Akwuobi also commended the Commissioner for Works, Arc. Okey Ezeobi, for facilitating the project, expressing confidence that the restored drainage channel would improve water flow, reduce flooding, enhance sanitation and create a safer environment for residents.
The development was greeted with excitement by residents, many of whom described the project as a dream come true after years of suffering recurring floods that displaced families, damaged homes and businesses, disrupted movement and exposed the community to serious health and environmental hazards.
One of the residents, Comrade Anthony Okeke, praised Governor Soludo for fulfilling the long-standing expectations of the people of Okpoko. According to him, the commencement of the project reflects a responsive government that listens to the concerns of its citizens and remains committed to sustainable development.
As work progresses, residents are optimistic that the desilting of the Sakamori Gutter will not only end years of flooding but also open a new chapter of improved environmental safety, better road access and enhanced quality of life for the people of Okpoko.
