Young Nigerian Woman Trafficked to Cotonou for Prostitution Dies After Returning Home

A young Nigerian woman who was allegedly trafficked to Cotonou, Benin Republic, for prostitution has died after being brought back to Nigeria.

The woman, identified as Sewuese, reportedly passed away in Benue State on Friday, July 24, 2026.

Activist Zege Orkwande, who has been involved in efforts to rescue trafficked Benue women from Cotonou, confirmed her death while promising that those responsible for her alleged trafficking would be brought to justice.

In a statement, the activist said investigations were ongoing and vowed that the individuals involved in taking Sewuese to Cotonou would face the law.

“People are asking, ‘Who took Sewuese to Cotonou?’ Trust my process,” he wrote.

He added that all relevant information had been gathered and that he was waiting for her burial before taking further steps.

“The people that trafficked or smuggled her to Cotonou for prostitution will surely face the law and serve in prison uniform,” he stated.

The circumstances surrounding Sewuese’s death and the details of her alleged trafficking remain under investigation.

Her death has once again drawn attention to the dangers of human trafficking and sexual exploitation, particularly the trafficking of young Nigerian women across international borders.
