Transatlantic University of Medicine and Health Sciences Receives NUC Licence, Set to Begin Academic Activities
The newly established Transatlantic University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Umuchukwu, Anambra State, has received an operational licence from the National Universities Commission, NUC, paving the way for the commencement of academic activities at the institution.
The university officially received its operational licence and accreditation clearance on Friday at the NUC headquarters in Abuja after successfully meeting the Commission’s prescribed standards for operation.
The licence was presented by the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, to the founder of the institution, Dr. Godwin Maduka.
With the approval, the university is set to commence admissions into three faculties offering a total of 17 accredited academic programmes.
Presenting the licence, Professor Ribadu congratulated the institution for meeting the required benchmarks and reaffirmed the NUC’s commitment to quality assurance, high academic standards and the development of a globally competitive university system in Nigeria.
The founder, Dr. Godwin Maduka, a United States based physician and pain management specialist, said the university would position Anambra State as a major hub for medical education, scientific research and innovation.
He said the institution would contribute to the advancement of healthcare delivery, create employment opportunities and provide young people with access to quality education and rewarding careers in the health sector.
Dr. Maduka also disclosed that African traditional medicine would be given priority in the institution, describing the field as an area of longstanding interest and passion in his medical practice.
The Acting Vice Chancellor and former Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Professor Charles Okechukwu Esimone, described the establishment of the university as the beginning of a new era in human capital development, medical education and health research in Nigeria and Africa.
Professor Esimone said the university had recruited experienced medical professionals, researchers and academics from different parts of the world to provide world class teaching, research and innovation.
With both the founder and Acting Vice Chancellor being professors of pharmacy, observers expressed optimism that the institution would make significant contributions to the training and capacity building of future generations of medical professionals.
The university’s facility, reputed to be one of the tallest medical university and research centres in Africa, is equipped with modern infrastructure and equipment designed to support advanced teaching, research and healthcare development.
