Four Fulani Herders Killed as Gunmen Attack Settlement

Four Fulani herders, reportedly brothers from the same family, have been killed after gunmen attacked a cattle settlement in the Ifite Awka area of Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at a settlement near Miracle Junction. The victims were identified as Mohammed Bujumi, Hassan Bujumi, Abubakar Bujumi, and Sani Bujumi.

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, said several cattle were also killed during the attack, while some of the animals were reportedly slaughtered. One herder, Usman Iliyasu, was said to have escaped.

Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Police Command said its Police led Joint Security Team responded to a distress call and discovered the bodies of four male victims with fatal injuries. The Police said preliminary findings showed that the victims had their hands tied and sustained multiple injuries, including machete cuts and blunt force trauma.

The Police further disclosed that two residential huts were set ablaze, while four cows were found dead at the scene. Two other cows had reportedly been slaughtered, with portions of the meat removed. Several sacks containing abandoned chunks of meat were also recovered.

The Command said the attackers were suspected to be armed with AK 47 rifles, pump action guns, double barrel guns, and machetes. One survivor is assisting investigators with useful information, while the Commissioner of Police has ordered a comprehensive investigation to identify, arrest, and prosecute those responsible.

MACBAN condemned the attack and appealed to security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice. The association also urged its members to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
