16-Year Old Nigerian Boy Dies After Lake Incident in UK

A 16 year old Nigerian boy, Iretomiwa Abiodun Micheal, popularly known as Tomiwa, has died after getting into difficulty while swimming at Swanholme Lakes in Lincoln, United Kingdom.

According to Lincolnshire Police, emergency services were called to the popular lake at about 5:48 p.m. on July 9 after receiving reports of a person in distress in the water. Personnel from the police, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service, and the East Midlands Ambulance Service responded promptly and rescued the teenager.

Although Tomiwa initially showed signs of responding to treatment at the scene, he sadly died later that evening at about 8:50 p.m. in hospital with his parents by his side. Police said a file will be submitted to the coroner, who will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In an emotional tribute, his parents, Abiodun and Tope Micheal, described their son as a vibrant, energetic and unforgettable young man whose laughter, warmth and joyful spirit brightened every place he went. They said he was the eldest of four brothers, a caring protector and a constant source of encouragement to his siblings.

Tomiwa was an active footballer who played for Greenbank FC and Lincoln City FC and was widely known for his friendly nature and willingness to help others. He was also a committed member of his church youth ministry.

His parents said Tomiwa leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, discipline, joy and compassion, adding that although his life was short, it made a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
