Anambra Assembly Urges Soludo to Evacuate Indigenes Facing Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa
The Anambra State House of Assembly has called on Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo to urgently facilitate the evacuation of stranded Anambra indigenes facing xenophobic attacks and other harsh conditions in South Africa.
The resolution followed a motion moved during Tuesday’s plenary by the Majority Leader, Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme, and supported by other lawmakers.
The House appealed to the governor to mobilise well meaning individuals, philanthropic organisations, the organised private sector and diaspora groups to support the humanitarian intervention.
Presenting the motion, Hon. Ofodeme expressed concern over the worsening situation confronting many Anambra citizens in South Africa.
He noted that while many travelled abroad in search of better economic opportunities, they are now faced with xenophobic attacks, unfavourable immigration policies, economic hardship and other security challenges, leaving many stranded and placing enormous emotional and financial burdens on their families back home.
The lawmakers stressed that the situation requires urgent and collective action, drawing inspiration from the Igbo philosophy of Onye Aghana Nwanne Ya meaning “Be your brother’s keeper.”
They urged wealthy Anambra industrialists, captains of industry, philanthropists and diaspora organisations to partner with the state government in providing assistance to affected citizens.
Contributing to the debate, members representing Aguata Constituency I, Hon. Anayo Okpalaeke, Ihiala Constituency I, Hon. Jude Ngobili, and Onitsha South Constituency I, Hon. Fred Ezenwa, commended the sponsor of the motion, describing it as a timely humanitarian appeal.
They maintained that the plight of stranded Anambra indigenes in South Africa demands swift intervention and collective responsibility.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, also commended the initiative and expressed support for efforts aimed at ensuring the safe return and welfare of Anambra citizens affected by the crisis.
