Delta Police Demote Two Officers Over POS Extortion.
The Delta State Police Command has demoted two officers after they were found guilty of extorting a motorist in a case that sparked widespread public outrage.
The officers, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, were caught in a viral video receiving money through a Point of Sale, POS, terminal inside a police station in Asaba.
Following an internal disciplinary trial, the Command found them guilty of disobedience to lawful order, extortion, and discreditable conduct.
As part of the punishment, Inspector Jeremiah was reduced in rank to Sergeant, while Corporal Ehirim was demoted to Constable.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, reaffirmed that the Inspector General of Police has prohibited the use of POS terminals and other electronic payment platforms in police stations.
He stressed that no police officer is permitted to demand or receive money from members of the public under any circumstance.
The Commissioner said the disciplinary action demonstrates the Command’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, and public trust.
He also urged citizens to continue reporting cases of police misconduct, assuring that every complaint would be thoroughly investigated and handled in accordance with the law.
