Russian Airstrike Claims Life of Nigerian Medical Graduate Days Before Graduation

A 23 year old Nigerian medical graduate, Nnani Adaobi Marian, has died after succumbing to severe injuries sustained in a Russian airstrike on Kharkiv, Ukraine, just days before her graduation ceremony.

Adaobi, a graduate of Kharkiv National Medical University, was critically injured on June 29, 2026, when Russian forces dropped guided aerial bombs on the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv. She was initially treated in Kharkiv before being transferred to Germany for advanced medical care, where she died on Sunday, July 5, despite efforts by doctors to save her life.

In a statement, Kharkiv National Medical University described Adaobi as a bright, sincere and compassionate young woman who was known for her dedication to learning, hard work and genuine desire to help others.

Adaobi enrolled at the university in 2020 and completed international internships at the University of Cambridge and Biruni University in Türkiye during her studies.

She and her friend, Fatima Huseynova, were reportedly on their way to a graduation photoshoot when the airstrike occurred. Fatima died at the scene, while Adaobi was rushed to hospital with life threatening injuries. The attack also left several other civilians injured.
