Ford Rehires Human Engineers After AI Falls Short in Quality Inspections

Ford Motor Company has rehired more than 300 experienced quality engineers after artificial intelligence systems failed to consistently meet the standards required for vehicle quality inspections.

The US automaker had introduced AI into parts of its operations, including quality control, as part of efforts to improve efficiency, reduce costs and boost productivity. However, company executives said the technology could not fully replace the expertise of seasoned engineers.

Ford’s Vice President of Vehicle Hardware Engineering, Charles Poon, said the company had underestimated the value of experienced engineers who had worked through multiple vehicle development cycles. He noted that while artificial intelligence remains a valuable tool, its effectiveness depends on the quality of the data used to train it.

The decision reflects a growing recognition within the automotive industry that human expertise remains essential in areas requiring complex judgment and product evaluation, despite increasing investment in AI driven technologies.

Ford has been expanding the use of artificial intelligence across its operations in recent years. The company’s Chief Operating Officer, Kumar Galhotra, previously disclosed that AI was being deployed throughout its industrial system, while Chief Executive Officer Jim Farley has described the technology as one that could significantly reshape white collar jobs.
