Army Investigates Alleged Assault on UNIOSUN Students After Hostel Raid

Military authorities have launched an investigation following allegations that operatives from the Army Depot in Osogbo invaded student hostels at the University of Osun (UNIOSUN), assaulted students and confiscated their mobile phones.

The incident reportedly occurred on Monday night. University authorities said the soldiers entered several hostels, assaulted students and seized more than 60 mobile phones and other gadgets. The matter has since been reported to the management of the Army Depot.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Clement Adeboye, described the incident as unfortunate, stating that the institution had expected the nearby Army Depot to enhance security around the campus. He said the university had formally lodged a complaint with the military authorities and was awaiting the outcome of their investigation.

The university’s spokesperson, Ademola Adesoji, alleged that more than 20 students were affected during the operation. He said some female students reported being stripped and subjected to indecent touching, while several male students were also assaulted. He added that two students were hospitalised after the incident, with one discharged on Tuesday morning.

Adesoji also said more than 60 mobile phones and other gadgets were confiscated during the raid. According to him, five suspected perpetrators were identified and brought to the university before they were returned to the Army Depot. He said military authorities indicated that disciplinary action would be taken if the allegations were established. The university, however, said it could not confirm allegations of rape and noted that investigations are ongoing.
